In September of 2009 in Portland, the Linux Foundation will introduce a new annual technical conference, LinuxCon, designed to provide a collaboration and education space for all matters Linux in North America. At LinuxCon “community” is an inclusive concept meaning everyone with a stake in Linux is welcome. This isn’t a top-down, for profit conference controlled by a commercial entity. This is for community, by community. It’s a big tent and we want all you inside.

LinuxCon is:

  • Technical: The best and the brightest from the Linux community will share their knowledge with papers-based conference sessions. Topics will include a wide swath of technical areas within and around the OS.
  • Multi-disciplinary: Besides general Linux sessions, LinuxCon will have targeted mini conferences on sys admin issues, desktop, mobile and embedded needs.
  • Inclusive: Developers, end users and industry will all be there to learn from each other. LinuxCon doesn’t just focus on one area of Linux. Kernel, utilities, desktop projects, user space -- it’s all there.
  • Flexible: This is your conference. If Mobile is big this year, we’ll do more mobile. If community groups need a place to meet, let’s work together on adding mini-summits to help. We like to think of it as the umbrella conference for community-based Linux face-to-face meetings.
  • Star-Studded: LinuxCon is co-located with the annual Linux Plumbers Conference. This means we already have a star-studded pool of technical and community talent to draw from. Maintainers, core developers, talented end users are already planning on attending. The backing of the Linux Foundation also ensures the right people will be in the room.

Who Should Attend

  • Linux developers: (kernel, upstream projects, desktop, mobile/embedded projects, etc.) Meet and learn from your peers. Teach those just starting out. Stay on for the Linux Plumbers Conference where you’ll solve key issues facing the platform.
  • Linux users: if you want to learn seriously technical stuff about Linux, this is your place. If you want a trade show, look elsewhere.
  • Community leaders: Need a place for your community to meet? This may be the perfect location to co-locate with.
  • Vendors: Whether you’re a Linux veteran who wants to keep up on the latest developments or a newbie needing to plug into the Linux community, LinuxCon will connect you with the right people and the right information. It will also allow you to reach and influence users and developers.
  • Students and Others Wanting to Get Involved: The LinuxCon provides a unique opportunity for students or others just starting out to meet and learn from the veterans of the Linux movement.

Type of Content:
General conference sessions, tutorials, keynotes and a technology day to showcase the best and brightest inventions and products. Mini conferences could include mobile.linuxcon, sysadmin.linuxcon, embedded.linuxcon and desktop.linuxcon.

Why Another Linux Event?
Because Linux is innovating at a breakneck pace, Linux users and developers need a technical conference where they can learn. The Linux community in North America also needs a place where they can collaborate with their peers. They need one umbrella event they can directly participate in. This conference will provide them that space to learn and collaborate.
